San Diego Wave FC earned a dramatic 2-1 victory over Washington Spirit on Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium, highlighted by Trinity Byars’ first professional goal and a late winner from Kimmi Ascanio.

San Diego struck early in the sixth minute after Byars took advantage of a defensive mistake inside the box. Making her first pro start, the forward calmly created space before finishing into the top corner for the opening goal.

Washington answered midway through the first half when Leicy Santos delivered a corner kick that Rebecca Bernal converted with a header to level the match.

The Wave secured all three points in the closing moments of the game. Off a late corner from Kenza Dali, 18-year-old Ascanio rose in front of goal and headed home the decisive finish in the 89th minute.

-Kimmi Ascanio scored her first goal of the season and the fifth of her professional career.
