San Diego Sockers captured the Ron Newman Cup on Monday night with a commanding 10-3 victory over the Milwaukee Wave at Frontwave Arena, clinching the championship series 2-1 and securing the franchise’s 17th title overall.
Led by a hat trick from Sebastian Mendez and a standout performance from Finals MVP Leonardo de Oliveira, who contributed two goals and an assist, San Diego overwhelmed Milwaukee early with a dominant first half. The Sockers turned a 1-1 opening-quarter tie into a massive 7-1 advantage behind relentless attacking pressure and efficient finishing.
Drew Ruggles added a goal and two assists, while Tavoy Morgan also recorded a goal and two helpers during the offensive explosion. Goalkeeper Chris Toth made nine saves and earned Finals Goalkeeper honors as San Diego controlled the match from start to finish.
The Sockers set the tone early after capitalizing on an aggressive Milwaukee attack strategy, with Mendez opening the scoring midway through the first quarter. Although the Wave briefly equalized, San Diego quickly responded and never looked back, piling on goals through sharp passing, set-piece execution, and strong transition play.
After carrying a six-goal lead into halftime, the Sockers continued to manage the game defensively while Milwaukee struggled to mount a comeback. Late goals from Milwaukee narrowed the margin temporarily, but another strike from Mendez in the fourth quarter effectively sealed the championship before empty-net finishes closed out the scoring.
Backed by a loud crowd of 3,860 fans at Frontwave Arena, San Diego celebrated another championship run and added a third MASL-era title to the organization’s historic legacy.
